BUCKEYE BURL HOLLOW FORM
This piece is unusual in every way. Some may even say it’s.. ugly or fugly but it is cool looking no matter which way you land. Zombie or unicorn- they both have a cool factor.
I focus on working with salvaged woods from my region. Once in a while I will trade or receive an amazing gift like this Buck Eye Burl from @sour_charley_ . What can I say about buck eye burl.. how much time do you have? It is truly a wonder..
Buckeye Burl (Aesculus californica) is an unusual species. Colors range from blue-black to golden whites with a nice mixture in between. Buckeye is a very difficult and expensive wood to mill. Some of the obstacles faced when milling are rocks, sand, dirt, bullets, and rattle snakes. Yep… rattle snakes inside the voids in the burl.
The Base of the tree (root wad) that is underground produces 90% or more of the burl.
Although Buckeye is a hardwood it is much softer than many softwoods- it is extremely soft this 10” piece weighs 11 ounces. This made it very difficult and delicate when turning. With this in mind I stabilized part of the wood using @minwaxusa wood hardener
and I attached a tenon in an attempt to salvage as much of the wood as possible.
